Strengthening Information Sharing Infrastructure and Governance Frameworks to Address Human Nature Conflicts

A recent report published by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), concludes that nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history and that the loss is a direct result of human activity. The IPBES findings were further highlighted during the Pan-African Conference on Strengthening Information Sharing Infrastructure and Governance Frameworks to Address Human-Nature Conflicts, held in Arusha from 17-19th June, 2019 and organized by the United Nations Development Programme along with the Government of United Republic of Tanzania. The Arusha conference recommended a combination of efforts, starting from transnational and cross agency collaboration; monitoring and capacity development; and the need for a common information platform that can provide timely information.

Within the thematic area of TICAD – Advancing Africa’s Development through People, Technology and Innovation and framing the issue within the sustainable developmental goals 15, 16 and 17; the Lusaka Agreement Task Force (LATF), supported by Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC) will organize an official side-event proposing a way forward for building a robust infrastructure for facilitating information sharing and governance frameworks to address illegal wildlife trade, human wildlife conflicts and agro-pastoral conflicts in Africa.

The event will be presided by ministers from African countries, policy makers, academicians and NGOs where they will discuss technological and policy level measures required for building a spatial transboundary information sharing infrastructure in Africa to address the information gaps in wildlife law enforcement. The event will be of significant importance to technological, governance and policy makers and scientist from Japanese and foreign institutions who are working on African issues.
