RESTEC organized a JICA Training Program for Forest Conservation using JJ-FAST

2019-12-11

RESTEC organized the “JICA Training Program for Tropical Forest Management using the JICA-JAXA Forest Early Warning System (JJ-FAST) in the Tropics, an ALOS-2 2 based Forest Monitoring System and Other Satellite Techniques” from October 27 to November 15, 2019, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) just as last year. 10 participants from 8 countries – Brazil (1), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2), Mozambique (2), Guyana (1) and Peru (2) – joined this program.

The program included lectures on forest management and conservation in Japan as well as hands-on exercises on advanced analysis of JJ-FAST. The trainees also visited the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in the Tsukuba Space Center to discuss with the JAXA JJ-FAST development team, and visited Gotemba city in Shizuoka to see deforested areas and their GIS for forest management.

As the conclusion of this training program, trainees respectively made an concrete action plan which will contribute to their countries’ forest management and conservation using JJ-FAST and satellite techniques based on the knowledge and skills they had learned through the program.

Many questions and discussions were raised during the lectures and exercises, and the participants gave advice to each other indicating their high level of interests in applying remote sensing to forest management.
RESTEC will continue to contribute to forest management and conservation in each country through satellite techniques.
