RESTEC Supports the 2nd JICA Agricultural RS Training in SA
On May 23-25, 2017, RESTEC supported “JICA Training Course on EO Satellites for Agricultural Remote Sensing” held in Pretoria, South Africa. The training course was funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with the South African National Space Agency (SANSA). RESTEC dispatched three experts upon the request of JICA. It was the 7th time for RESTEC to dispatch lecturers to South Africa following the 6th training course in February 2017.
22 trainees from ministries, agencies, and companies in South Africa participated in and completed the 3 day training.
The training focused on the agricultural application of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and environmental observation satellite data, particularly to maize crop modeling. Trainees achieved deeper understanding of these data and analyzing tools for crop monitoring and food security.
Following the training, field survey of maize-planted areas was conducted near Bothaville, Free State on May 29-31, 2017. After the lecture on field data collection, trainees recorded the conditions of the maize-planted areas for the validation of the maize-planted map estimated with time-series ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 full-polarimetry data.
