Peruvian Trainees Learn about Forest Remote Sensing

RESTEC arranged a remote sensing training course on forest monitoring and the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for four trainees from Peru. They stayed in Japan for two weeks as a part of the “Project on Capacity Development for Forest Conservation and REDD+ Mechanisms” funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and conducted by Nippon Koei Co., Ltd. and Kokusai Kogyo Co., Ltd.

RESTEC provided lectures about general remote sensing, SAR remote sensing, and forest monitoring by satellites. RESTEC also arranged a facility tour to the Tsukuba Space Center of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Shinshu University Forest.

The participants had interest in “JJ-FAST,” an early warning system for the deforestation of tropical forests by using JAXA’s earth observation satellite, “ALOS-2.” RESTEC has been supporting JICA and JAXA in developing the system.
