South African delegation completes its training program

2015-09-18

On Sep 18, 2015, the trainees from South Africa completed the entire training program arranged by RESTEC. During their one month stay in Japan, they learned about the policy concerning Japan’s earth observation, the theory of SAR, various applications of remote sensing, the roles of the private sector, activities of small satellite development, etc.

The facilities they visited included:
◇Tanegashima Space Center (TNSC) / Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
◇Tsukuba Space Center (TKSC) / JAXA
◇Earth Observation Center (EOC) / JAXA
◇Tokai University Space Information Center (TSIC)
◇Kamakura Satellite Factory / Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO)

One of the highlights of the program was three days of specialized SAR training by Prof. Shimada of Tokyo Denki University, who is the most notable scientist of SAR in Japan. The delegation was impressed by his theory and algorithm. His lecture was conducted at EOC, Hatoyama Town, Saitama Prefecture and the town mayor visited the delegation ceremonially at the end.

Mr. Aubrey Kekana, the head of the delegation, stated, “The South African delegation is impressed with the level of excellence and professionalism with which the training program on SAR was conducted by RESTEC. The course provided a clear theoretical and scientific background to SAR imagery (specifically the imagery acquired from ALOS and ALOS-2) and also exposed us to the relevant practical applications of SAR data. The course exceeded our expectations. There is no doubt that the knowledge we have acquired from the training will be immediately implemented when we arrive back in South Africa, for the benefit of our stakeholders in particular, and the South African society in general. This knowledge and expertise will also be expanded beyond the borders of South Africa.”

This program was fully funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). RESTEC would like to express its appreciation for this precious opportunity provided by JICA.

RESTEC would also like to state its appreciation for the excellent lectures conducted by lecturers from Rissho Univ., Tamagawa Univ., Tokai Univ., Tokyo Denki Univ., Canon Electronics Inc., Esri Japan, Japan Space Systems (JSS), Kokusai Kogyo Co., Ltd (KKC), Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO), Mitsubishi Space Software Co., Ltd (MSS), NEC Corporation, Pasco Corporation, and JAXA.
