RESTEC supports JICA’s SAR Training for Disaster Risk Reduction in SA
On June 1 to July 2, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held a remote sensing training course on Japanese earth observation satellites for disaster risk reduction, in collaboration with the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) at their ground station near Pretoria, South Africa. Upon the request of JICA, RESTEC dispatched two lecturers to teach and give lectures about how to detect flooded areas using data collected by Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). It was the 2nd training course on remote sensing, following the 1st course on forestry in March 2015.
19 participants from ministries, agencies, and local governments in SA joined the training and learned about the principles of SAR and the analysis method for Advanced Land Observing Satellite -1 and 2 (ALOS-1/2) data. They successfully completed this training course and another course is scheduled for November 2015.
