RESTEC Delivers a Lecture on Remote Sensing for JICA trainees

2015-07-15

On July 1, RESTEC delivered a lecture about Satellite Data Applications to Forest Monitoring for the trainees who attended the training course entitled “GIS and Remote Sensing Utilized for Biodiversity Information System and Participatory Approach toward Biodiversity Conservation Actions,” funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and organized by EnVision Conservation Office.

Seven trainees from six countries (Botswana, Costa Rica, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, and Uganda) are staying in Japan for two months from June 1 to August 8 to learn about knowledge and technologies relating to GIS, remote sensing, database, and related survey methods as well as ideas to promote people’s participation in biodiversity conservation activities in their home countries.

In the lecture at RESTEC, the trainees learned about the efficiency of remote sensing for real time forest monitoring, which is a pressing challenge and an important issue for biodiversity conservation, especially in the countries which are facing problems of illegal logging, encroachment and forest fires.
