1. RESTEC Supported JAXA's SAR Training in Bangladesh

On 24th – 26th February 2015, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) and the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO) held “2nd JAXA SAR Data Training preparing for ALOS-2 Satellite Data Use” in Dhaka, Bangladesh. RESTEC supported planning and coordinating and sent 2 lecturers for the training.

2. RESTEC Supported JICA's SAR Training in South Africa

On 9th – 11th March 2015, the Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA) held a remote sensing training course in the collaboration with the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) at their ground station near Pretoria, South Africa. According to the request from JICA, RESTEC sent two lecturers to give lectures and teach how to handle SAR data. JICA prepared a large volume of ALOS data as well as PCs for trainees.

3. Commencement of the Development of Weather Index Insurance Services

RESTEC, jointly with the Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Group, has commenced the development of “Weather Index Insurance” services for farmers in Southeast Asia. The Weather Index Insurance pays out contractual insurance benefits to policyholders when weather indicators that have major impacts on agriculture with the absence of loss assessment for individual policyholders keeping the insurance service’s running cost low.

4. Message and Photos from RESTEC Alumnus in Bangladesh

It was great pleasure for me to meet Kamei san and Tomiyama san. Tomiyama san has been known to me since I attended the training organized by JICA & RESTEC in 2013. I must say that it was a good training program on SAR image processing and applicaiton.

Sometimes I work with SAR. I have used several ALOS PALSAR data for my research. I also hope to use ALOS-2 datasets in future.

Thanks also for sharing some of ALOS-2 data that was available through this training program. I would like to check once more if we could extract young plantation using the datasets.

We are very thankful to JAXA and RESTEC to organize this training program in Bangladesh.

5. Message from Coordinator

Since the release of the RESTEC e-news this year, I have been writing episodes of the JICA trainees of earlier times in the coordinator’s column from #1 to #8. In this issue, I would like to report about the memorable trainees.

The trainees were supposed to stay at the Tokyo International Center(TIC) of JICA for two months. Everyone had their own way of spending their spare time from four o’clock after the courses on weekdays and full weekends as well.

1)The Athlete changed into the gym clothes right after the course was over, and went out for jogging.

2)The social busy bee went out to find a party in town every night and familiarized himself with the entertainment areas in Tokyo. He proudly applied to be a guide by saying, “Please ask me anything about Shinjuku and Kawasaki!”

3)During the month of Ramadan, the devout Muslim was fasting and planned to have breakfast before the sun rise and put her foods in the refrigerator the day before. But, unfortunately, a hotel staff locked it at night and didn’t open until seven o’clock in the morning. Therefore, she couldn’t have her breakfast. Because of unplanned hunger, she had been sullen all day long.

That’s how the trainees were outside of the courses and on the job trainings.

We would very much like to hear from you even if you are not currently using any satellite data. Please feel free to send us ( few lines on your current activities along with your name, current place of work (organization) and the month and the year of the RESTEC training you joined. Your cooperation will be very much appreciated.
