Announcement

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Group on Earth Observations, it is my pleasure to announce that the 5th GEOSS Asia-Pacific Symposium will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from 2 to 4 April 2012. The Symposium is being organized by the GEO Secretariat and GEO japan, with the support of Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology (MEXT). It will address the theme of "GEO Initiatives towards Green Growth in the Asia-Pacific Region", promote societal benefits from the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) and discuss how GEOSS can contribute to the upcoming United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

The Symposium will further strengthen international networking within the region and share the Asia-Pacific’s experiences with the world. Each country will report on the progress it has made in implementing GEOSS since the last Asia-Pacific Symposium in Indonesia. To focus the discussions, we are organizing parallel sessions on the following topics;

  • Asian Water Cycle Initiative (AWCI);
  • Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Observation Network (AP-BON);
  • Forest Carbon Tracking (FCT);
  • Ocean Observation and Society; and
  • Agriculture and Food Security.

The Symposium will demonstrate the benefits of Earth observation applications to end users in developing countries, particularly in the fields of Water, Biodiversity, Forests, Ocean and Agriculture in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Symposium will take place at National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan). An agenda and details on registration, hotels and related matters are available on the Symposium website

We are looking forward to seeing you in Tokyo.

Sincerely,

José Achache

Secretariat Director
